A Short History Of Architectural Drawings
Jan 8th 2012, 10:39

For hundreds of years architectural drawings were drawn up and reproduced by hand with ink on paper. These scale drawings were drawn according to standard conventions and used as building plans, working sketches, and as records. During the twentieth century technical advances changed the way draftsmen performed their job. The introduction of digital technology has caused a switch to computer aided drafting, or CAD. The origins of the detailed plans of structures common to modern times was in the Renaissance, when artists made detailed sketches of classical buildings and began planning buildings that they imagined. In those days, the renderings did not include measurements and the conventions for detailed plans had not yet been set. Builders were expected to follow the illustration and work out the details. As building became more complex, the art of drafting the plans advanced so that everything was spelled out in detail. Working up the plans including all the levels of detail became the process for spelling out engineering and construction problems before beginning the actual building. Creating detailed plans helps to avoid construction delays, to make cost estimates and to help the builder decide to commit to a project. Eventually, the conventions used in modern architecture were adopted by the architects who prepared the plans. Certain views became standard, such as floor plans, which are horizontal views of the floor of a building usually at a height of three feet, showing how all the objects are arranged. This includes the walls, locations of windows and doors, fittings, stairs, and sometimes furniture in solid lines. Another view is an elevation, which might be the depiction of an exterior or interior wall of a building. A cross section, similar to a floor plan, is a vertical plane section which cuts through a building. All these are drawn as orthogonal views, which means they are depicted with opposite sides parallel, in other words, the sides do not converge as in a perspective view. These are combined to create comprehensive plans for the building, used at stages to solve engineering problems or construction guides. Copies of plans at first needed to be laboriously redrawn by hand, which was done on special paper such as vellum that could not shrink or stretch. When the blueprint process was developed, making accurate copies was simplified. Another advance was the switch to tracing paper, which allowed for much easier copies to be made of building plans. Better tools such as adjustable squares and technical pens cut down on the time and labor needed to produce renderings. Technical drafting aides like the parallel motion drafting table and transfer lettering also helped to reduce the labor in producing drawings.. By far the biggest advance for creating architectural drawings came with the application of computer technology to this discipline. CAD software programs have taken over the production of building plans and have increased both the capabilities and speed of completion for planning structures. The choices for rendering details and materials and solving engineering challenges have been simplified. Digital plotters have made reproducing accurate prints an easy matter

Orthodontic Appliances Developed For Adults
Jan 8th 2012, 11:16

Nowadays, orthodontic appliances are becoming more and more popular among adults, since many of them are now showing great interest about ways to preserve their healthy teeth. In addition, many adults now know about the fact that orthodontic treatments will be able to provide them with better smile. Today, there are several treatment procedures that are used in order to correct the irregularities of the teeth among adults. Among these treatments include fixed braces, lingual appliances and Invisalign. For some severe cases of teeth misalignment, painless surgical procedures are commonly used. Fixed braces are among the commonly used treatments for misaligned teeth. They are square-shaped individual brackets which are placed on every tooth and there are metal rings attached at the back of the teeth. These metal rings and square-shaped brackets are joined together using fine wire. If you get this treatment, you need to wear it for about six to eighteen months. You also have to go to an orthodontic clinic on a monthly basis for consultation. Lingual appliances are also used by orthodontists for correcting teeth irregularities. This treatment is commonly placed within the mouth of the patient. Usually, an orthodontist would need to apply surgery for this type of treatment. Nevertheless, this type of treatment is only done if the orthodontic problems are more complex and if simpler methods don’t work. Another treatment used by orthodontic specialists is Invisalign, which is considered by many to be a better substitute for traditional metal braces. One of the many advantages of wearing this aligner is that it is practically invisible, which means it will be hard for anyone to notice that you are wearing them. This unique method is commonly done using brackets and wires. It also makes use of transparent plastic aligners. These orthodontic aligners are made using a three dimensional computer imaging technology. And based on the bite impressions of the patient, an orthodontist can create a perfect solution to the patient’s orthodontic problems. Invisalign allows for slow moving of the patient’s teeth into proper positions and they need to be change every two weeks. Another benefit of Invisalign is that they can be removed so that the user can eat food without feeling any type of discomfort. This removability also allows for the user to maintain good oral hygiene. Unlike metal braces, Invisalign needs to be worn for about 12 months. But, it also requires monthly consultation with the orthodontist to be more effective.

Jan 8th 2012, 14:33

Soccer or football is a popular sport all around the world. One of the most famous players is from Brazil. He is known to millions of fans as Pele: the king of soccer or the soccer magician. Pele was born on October 23rd, 1940 in the city of Tres Coracoes. Pele in his childhood practiced football tricks with a home made ball. He didn’t even have shoes to play. He played with bare feet later. When he was eleven, he played for the team- Little America in Bauru. His team won the match because of a spectacular goal scored by Pele. Pele was from a poor family. Therefore, he worked as a shoemaker at the railway station to help his family. Later, Santos team of Sao Paulo invited Pele to join their club when he was just fifteen. He played for Santos first team. Only in two months, he became so well known that he was chosen to be on Brazil’s all star team. Pele is the only player in the history of the game to have been a member of three world cup winning teams. He played for Brazil’s All Star Team and won the World Cup for them three times in 1958, 1962 and 1970. No any player in the world has achieved this landmark. FIFA declared him as the greatest player in the history of the game alongside Diego Mara Dona in 2000. Pele has scored an amazing 1,283 goals which is the highest number of goals by an individual player till date.

Antique Pottery Reproductions
Jan 8th 2012, 13:57

A Brief History Antique reproductions have abounded on the market for as many years as there have been antiques. As early as the 1960′s, reproductions of old pattern glass examples from the late 1800′s started to appear in antique shops, markets and shows. This early onset of reproductions spurred a niche market in the Antiques and Collectibles field. What occurred in the 1960′s spawned an incredible growth in reproductions not only in the glass markets but also in almost all specialty antique and collectible markets including cast iron and pottery. In the early 1970′s, the Merritt family headed by Mary and Bob Merritt started one of the longest running reproduction wholesalers in the USA, which later through a family dispute branched off into one of the most successful business ventures in the Antique reproduction field, known as Fred & Dottie’s, Inc. Up until the late 1970′s Merritts enjoyed somewhat of a monopoly until Fred Burkholder (son of Mary Merritt) and Dottie (Fred’s wife), both minority shareholders, broke away from Merritt’s after a bitter family dispute. Fred and Dottie Burkholder formed Fred & Dottie’s, Inc. and began their own reproduction wholesale business just a few miles down the road from their former partners in business. Within a few years, the rivals were ferociously competing as more Reproduction wholesalers began to spring up throughout the USA. Ralph Lussino and his brother, John, friends and former customers of the Burkholder’s and Merritts threw their ‘hat in the ring’ and formed Castle Antiques and Reproductions. All three of these Reproduction wholesalers are still in Business as of this writing, although Castle is in the process of liquidating their entire inventory and closing in late 2008. Glassware reproductions of the late 1800′s were extremely popular in the 1960′s and 1970′s, but began to slide in popularity, giving way to depression era glassware reproductions in the 1980′s. These trends were set primarily by the demand of the public to decorate with the hottest trend of that time. While the 1980′s and early 1990′s saw a dramatic increase in demand for depression-era glassware, the reproduction markets responded with 100′s of patterns of depression-era glassware. As time went on, the late 1990′s saw a trend toward art pottery of the 1950′s, which stimulated a growth of reproductions from the Weller, McCoy, Roseville and Majolica potters. The most popular of all these companies was the McCoy Pottery Company, mainly because it was the most recognizable, the most affordable and the most diverse of all the potters of the 1950′s. In 1997 an American manufacturer had set out to reproduce some of the most popular McCoy patterns, successfully manufacturing a line of over 110 pieces including cookie jars, vases, creamers, bowls, black memorabilia, and planters. Up until this time, an overwhelming majority of reproductions were manufactured in China, Mexico, India, Taiwan and England. This would be the only USA manufacturer of reproduction pottery and the only company permitted to use the USA logo on all their pottery. (Foreign imports are not permitted by law to put USA on their items in accordance with US Customs Federal law) Why Reproductions? Demand Designers and decorators want to enhance their client’s homes and business’, but are not able to find an available supply of the types of antiques they need. Collectors wishing to enhance their collection may search for years for that one rare ‘missing piece’ in their collection. There is a short supply of original antiques in the marketplace, and that supply shrinks every day as more people buy up original antiques. Affordability Imagine buying an original tiffany lamp for $4500 or you could choose a reproduction which has the same look and most times better quality at a fraction of the cost ($300-$500). You could decorate one room with an original, or your entire house with reproductions. Designers and decorators in the last decade have been using reproductions to decorate client’s homes and business’ because it is more affordable and the insurance replacement cost premium is much less. The only one who really knows that beautiful ‘Antique’ is not an original is you! The ‘LOOK’ When decorating, we all want to give our visitors, friends and clients the impression of wealth and ‘we are doing well’ attitude. What better way to stretch your decorating budget, then to display beautiful antique reproductions throughout your home or business? It just screams, “I am doing well! Look at my beautiful collection!” We all desire that LOOK, the look that we are keeping up with the ” Jones’s’ “, the look that exudes and exemplifies the epitome of wealth. Memories Remember when…? A question you have probably asked many times in your life, pondering the good old days or remembering that favorite vase mom or grandma always had on the mantle, or the cookie jar she had in the kitchen. It brings back the “good OLE’ days” when you see grandma’s cookie jar, you remember her baking your favorite chocolate chip cookies and you can almost taste them again. Our lives are filled with memories that bring back the pleasant times of our lives as we grew up. Having available reproductions and easily being able to acquire them brings back a rush of memories, giving us a feeling of euphoria and contentment. When you combine the demand, the affordability, the ‘look’ and the memories, you can see why antique reproductions are such an integral part of our lives. If you have been inspired by this article to reminisce, or you want to decorate your home or business with beautiful antique reproduction pottery, take a moment and visit the links below..
