The Architecture of Healing
Jan 5th 2012, 23:40

We must become the architects of our own healing. Life is traumatic. From the big trauma of being born and taking our first breath to the lesser traumas of day-to-day life we are here to be beaten up and to one degree or another develop an inner support system to heal. Like the pulsing of the heart and the ebb and flow of the tides, the body’s trauma/healing interplay is as natural as breathing. Our world has moved in strange directions in the last half-century. Every year Americans are turning more and more to surgical fixes for their injuries and ailments. With every ache and pain we take an advil or alleve. We are a society of external fixes, in search of a magic blue pill that will fix what ails us. The shift must be towards self-care and a belief that no one knows your body better than you. Doctors, nurses and body worker’s all serve a purpose. We need them to help facilitate our care and our health. But we have to take them off of the pedestal that we have created and become more pro-active in our own healing process.. What can and will fix us is easily found inside. We have a beautifully specific design that when embodied and enacted becomes a self-healing machine. Everyone knows what cancer is. Everyone knows what asthma is. Most people have heard of the word melanoma and can visualize a tumor but most people have not heard of the word psoas. Very few people know what the hyoid bone is. We are painfully familiar with external circumstances or things that work upon us when we’re really not all that familiar with the wonderful, magical body that we inhabit which can help us prevent so much of what ails us. Our bones hold us up, our muscle move the bones after getting direction from the nerves. If the bones are aligned and the muscles toned every movement you make will tone and stimulate all of your internal organs. Learn how your body works and discover that you are your best doctor. Cultivate a dialogue with your body that prioritizes instinct and trust. Get to know yourself. There is no better means to prevention. Be your own healer.

Modern House Design Revives Duplex Concept
Jan 6th 2012, 01:31

Duplexes are wonderful living solutions for urban environments, and this has been acknowledged as of late, the world over, from Manhattan to South Africa, Stockholm to Tokyo. Modern house design trends are especially visible in duplexes that have been remodeled from older dwellings – a two-story apartment in a historic building can receive a new lease on life, thanks to a few well-added design touches here and there. If you dream of the most elegant accommodation your city can offer, why limit yourself to a single story condo? Be inspired by previous designs, buy two apartments located one on top of the other and create your perfect duplex. There are plenty of successful such homes out there to inspire you. This Just In from Stockholm: Duplexes Rule! As a rule, Swedish capital Stockholm is a great source for inspiring designs in general and posh duplexes in particular. In the Stockholm suburb of Ostermalm, for instance, a 125 square meter duplex renting at a little over EUR3,000 per month perfectly illustrates modern house design principles. It makes heavy use of various tones of white, to create the impression of space. There is a wonderfully vintage fireplace in the day area, and the lofted upper level features apparent wooden beams that make the rooms feel vertically endless. However, the home does have a striking personality, achieved by employing lots of colorful décor details, from rugs to vases to art. Also in the Swedish capital, and also capitalizing on the use of white to achieve a spacious feel for an otherwise averagely sized home, this modern house design in Normalm is impressive for its spiraling floating staircase, sleek furnishing and cozy feel. It was remodeled from an older home, as it stands in a 19th century building at the heart of the city’s historic district. The current owners chose to preserve the vintage feel, while also enriching it with plenty of contemporary technologies and designs, so as to ensure the tenants all the comfort of an up-to-date lifestyle.. Duplexes provide the awesome advantage of being mindful to the widespread phenomenon of overcrowding. By not occupying too much space horizontally, but expanding skywards, they enable the intelligent use of living space. To boot, they often provide their inhabitants with a great view of the city skyline and chic little balconies and terrace, where one can enjoy one’s morning coffee, safely above the bustle of the waking city.

Golf Specific Core Exercises Using An Exercise Ball
Jan 6th 2012, 04:20

Adding an exercise ball to your core exercise routine is another way to take your golf weight training program to the next level. The main advantage of using an exercise ball is that it adds instability to every exercise that you perform. This instability will kick in many other muscles in the area to stabilize, give you a much more complete workout. One great thing about using an exercise ball for golfers is that you can mimic the trunk rotation motion that is a huge component of the golf swing. Strengthening these muscles with help prevent overuse injuries and will contribute to developing a more powerful golf swing! Ab Roll – Start in a tall kneel position with ball resting on the ground directly in front of you (for comfort, place something soft under your knees). Tighten your core muscles and slowly push the ball away from you, but keep your hands on the ball. This will cause you to lean forward, pivoting on your knees (it is very important not to bend at your hips during this part!). Roll forward until your muscles start to twitch and you feel like you can go no further and hold 5-10 seconds. Then return to the starting position. Repeat 10 times. Bird Dog – With the ball on the ground, lie on your stomach on top of the ball. Have both your feet and hands touching the ground and your back in a neutral position. Slowly extend your left arm and right leg and hold briefly. Return to starting position and then extend right arm and left leg. Repeat 10 times with each side. Knee Crunch – Start in a plank position (facing the floor, supported by both arms, knees straight, and feet resting on ball). Next, pull your knees forward toward your hips by rolling the ball. Return to starting position. Prone Back Extension – Lie on your stomach on top of the ball. Keep your feet wide for stability. Place your hand behind your head and slowly arch your back. Ball Pass – Lie on your back with knees bent and the ball on the ground behind your head. Grab the ball with both hands and slowly move the ball towards your waist, while at the same time elevating both legs. Place the ball between your elevated knees, hold, and lower legs to the floor with the ball while returning the arms overhead. Repeat the crunch but this time grab the ball with your hands and return it to behind your head.. Plank Twist – Start in the plank position (facing the ground, supported by locked arms, knees straight, with ankles resting at 11 and 2 o’clock on the ball). Rotate the ball by twisting at your hips, left foot moves to 12 while right to 4. Rotate to the opposite side. Side Plank – This is a challenging core exercise! Lie on either side will the ball positioned at your feet. Lift both legs and rest them on top of the ball. Elevate your hips/pelvis off the ground, will feet supported by the ball, and upper body supported by your bottom forearm/elbow. Target a hold time of 10 seconds. Perform as many reps as you feel comfortable with and then switch sides.

Seattle Mariners Handicapping: 2006 Season Preview
Jan 6th 2012, 06:34

The Mariners had 4 strong years before collapsing over the past 2. Their ballpark is not very hitter friendly and top hitters do not want to play there. Just ask Adrian Beltre how he feels to be a Mariner after having an MVP caliber season with the Dodgers the year before. The Mariners were a combined 132-192 (-49 units) the past 2 seasons. Las Vegas has not properly adjusted the odds for this team by overvaluing them an average of 15 points per game. These Mariners were a pretty bad team in the second game of a series if they lost their first game. Betting against them in that spot was 20-6 (+12 units) in 2005. When betting baseball, momentum is very important and losing the first game of a series can demoralize some teams. The Mariners were just so bad the past 2 years, everything should have demoralized them. The Mariners hit lefties better than righties in 2005. I am sure a lot of that has to do with left handed hitting Ichiro Suzuki at the top of their lineup. Since Ichiro is a very lethal instigator at the top of their lineup, I like betting against these Mariners when I see them going up against righties. Look for those spots when handicapping the 2006 season.
