City Palace of Jaipur – A Specimen of Remarkable Architecture
Jan 20th 2012, 17:07

Jaipur, the pink city is known for its outstanding forts and palaces. Among its various striking monuments, City Palace is an architectural wonder of Rajasthan. It offers you the best glimpses of Mughal and Rajasthani style. It covers around one seventh area of the entire city. This magnificent palace was scientifically designed and perfectly blended with the traditional architecture. Sawai Jai Singh II of the Kachhwaha clan of Rajputs started its construction which was later completed by his successors. This palace boasts of its major attractions which enthrall tourists to come here from far and wide. The grand structure has a huge complex with several gardens, courtyards, structures, halls and small palaces. Chandra Mahal This seven-storied building will leave you simply mesmerized. The lower two levels have Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II Museum that showcases a unique collection of 15th century weapons, rarities and carpets. The other floors like Sukh Nivas, Chavi Nivas, Shobha Nivas and Mukut Mahal look simply wonderful as they have still retained the age-old royal charm of the Rajputs. Mubarak Mahal It was constructed in late 19th century by Maharaja Madho Singh II. It is known as one of the finest examples of European architecture. It also showcases the textile section of Maharaja Sawai Maan Singh II museum. Museum You can see here the rich collection of Pashmina Shawls, royal costumes, Sanganeri prints, folk embroidery and Benarasi silk saris. It also offers tourists an opportunity to see the bulky clothes worn by Maharaja Sawai Madho Singh I. You can also see the best collection of 2000 weapons that date back to 1580s. Diwan-E-Khas It is the hall for private audience and has two of the world’s largest silver vessels. They were especially made for Maharaja Sawai Madho Singh II. The hall is an ideal example of traditional Rajput architecture. Diwan-E-Aam It is the hall for public audience that today serves as an art gallery. Here you can see beautifully painted ceilings of the hall and the ancient handwritten original manuscripts of several Hindu scriptures. Other most preferred attractions include Badal Mahal, Shri Govind Dev Temple and Sarvatobhadra Art Gallery. All the mahals inside the city palace complex have beautiful arches, pillars, grills and inlay work. Hawa Mahal and Nahargarh Fort are other famous attractions of Jaipur which are a great crowd-puller. They are the finest examples of architecture due to which these still retain the old-world charm.

Explore Chile’s Capital With an Architecture Tour of Santiago
Jan 20th 2012, 21:54

Santiago de Chile, one of the most beautiful capitals in South America, offers a great mixture of both modern and traditional architecture with dizzying skyscrapers and century-old traditional buildings standing side by side. If you are an architecture addict, you are sure to find your happiness just strolling the streets of Santiago. Look up and admire the many architectural treasures awaiting you! The city’s architecture is extraordinarily diverse with the vast majority of Santiago’s style reflecting a strong neoclassical European influence. Here are a few architectural gems that you cannot miss on while exploring the city. One of the greatest monuments in Santiago and a symbol of the city, the San Francisco Church is a must-see for all travelers to the city. Built in 1586, with a tower from the neo-classical style added in 1857, this gorgeous church is one of the last buildings reflecting the 16th century colonial style as most of them were destroyed over time by earthquakes. The Palacio de la Moneda, originally built as Chile’s royal mint in 1805 became a presidential palace in 1846 until the military coup in 1973. Enter and take a look at the two beautiful inner courtyards. Tours of the interior can also be arranged. The former National Congress building, now home to the offices of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is a true gem of neo-classical architecture. Continue on to the Bolsa de Comercia – Chile’s Stock Exchange – another beautiful building from the neo-classical style; this 1917 French structure boasts an impressive clock tower perched on the top of an arched cupola. Santiago’s train stations are also worth a stop. The Mapocho train station, now out of service, was once home to steam engines. With two-story arches and intricate terra cotta details, this elegant deserves a stop, if not for the vibrant local market that now occupies it. The only working station in Santiago, the Estacion Central, was designed by French architect Gustave Eiffel, and its metallic structure was built by the famous French firm Schneider. A must-see on any tour of Santiago is the charming and odd house-museum dedicated to the life of Chilean poet, Pablo Neruda. Known as La Chascona, this magical house was one of the residences of the famous author, and houses plethora of secrets, pieces of art and manuscripts from Neruda’s life. With a secret passageway, a room built in a tower, and an incredible library, the house is a gem of architecture, designed by the quirky poet himself.
