The Old Armoire: Picking Out Antique Cabinets for Your Home Jan 13th 2012, 01:38 With the current state of the world economy, purchasing antiques isn’t a top priority for most people. However, the antique industry in Australia is doing well despite the general slump. This only proves that consumers are still interested in the antique market. While antiques are mostly procured through auctions or private sales, there is no lack of shops and flea markets that specialize on second hand furniture. Antique cabinets are probably some of the most popular and most useful pieces a buyer can obtain. The addition of an antique cabinet inside a room can improve the look and feel of the space. Aside from the aesthetic benefits of an old armoire, it is can be quite functional as well. An old cabinet usually makes for a great storage unit in a home. So it comes as no surprise that a buyer would want to make sure that the cabinet to be purchased is of excellent value and quality. Here are some tips on how to pick out antique cabinets for a house. Examine Carefully When picking out antique cabinets, as with all other kinds of purchases, it is important for the buyer to ensure that the piece is worth the price paid for it. There are many sellers who will jump on the opportunity to fleece an unaware customer. To avoid this, the item in question must be examined carefully. It is advisable to visually and physically inspect the object from different angles and under different lights in order to guarantee the condition of the antique. Wooden cabinets may bear some imperfections on the surface, but the wood itself must be in excellent condition – meaning it would not fall apart with the slightest move or touch. Ask Questions A few questions wouldn’t hurt anyone as well. This will help a buyer determine the actual value of the furniture, and subsequently, the most ideal price for it. The general questions that one has to ask involves the time periods of the furniture, the material from which it was forged, and perhaps even the history of the item. A buyer would have to overcome shyness, because buying an antique is a serious investment. Owners of shops and flea market stalls that sell second hand furniture will generally be willing to answer a potential customer’s inquiries. Be Wise Good sense and judgment are valuable tools for a buyer of antique cabinets. Upon accomplishing the steps presented above, one would have to make a decision. The advantages of procuring such an item should be carefully weighed against its disadvantages. If there is a problem with the cabinet’s condition, then it would be wise to decline the sale. If the price is too steep or seemingly doubtful for a particular piece, then it would be prudent to browse around for other options. On the other hand, when the cons of going for the buy are negligible, and the buyer has a good feeling about the furniture piece, then he or she can proceed with the transaction. Why Antique Cabinets? There are several reasons that make antique cabinets beneficial for a home. For one thing, antiques in general are considered sensible investments. Over time, these pieces increase in value. If an owner decides to sell it, he earns. Antiques and second hand furniture have environmental advantages as well. Because these articles are usually made from natural materials and tend to last for a long period of time, they have reduced impact on the environment than their commercially produced counterparts. Last but not the least, the best antique cabinets simply look good and make a home more beautiful.

A Few Guidelines To Finishing Adult Orthodontics Jan 13th 2012, 03:47 Is it possible for older people to receive orthodontic treatment? In the past, its almost seemed taboo to obtain braces as an adult. Placing braces on the teeth of an 18+ year old was once thought of as unneeded, distressing, and also bizarre. These days, on the other hand, plenty of grown ups are taking the steps necessary to align their smile and mend their malocclusions. So how does an older patient with braces endure the treatment? Well, it all begins with realizing what you are in for. The initial steps include x rays, molds, and an orthodontic treatment strategy that’ll be outlined for you by your orthodontist. Your local orthodontist will evaluate your tooth impressions, formulate a treatment plan, and give you a complete consultation in regards to your orthodontic treatment. Before you receive your braces, the local orthodontist will possibly employ a variety of pre-treatment procedures, which include inserting the spacers in between your teeth in case your teeth are crowded together, a detailed teeth cleaning, and perhaps, the feared “oral extraction” if it proves needed to successfully mount the brackets.. When your mouth is ready for the braces, your orthodontist will apply some “etchant” on your teeth and attach the oral braces with a high strength plasma light. Don’t worry, though, this portion of the procedure is painless. After the braces are mounted to your teeth, a wire is placed through openings to start off the aligning process. You may also have small bands mounted on each brace, additionally. The bands hold the arch wire in place and help make the oral braces feel a little bit better against your inner lip. What will my mouth feel like once the process is complete? Technically, in the beginning, your jaw will feel a bit sore. The teeth already have started to shift, surprisingly, and the oral braces will likely irritate the interior of your cheeks. This is short-lived, though, and your mouth will soon adapt to the feeling of the new orthodontic braces. Chewing may also be complicated the first few days – which may result in your orthodontist confining the kinds of food that you can eat. In the long run, oral braces, even for adults, are a very good decision. While the braces may be attached to your teeth for a little while, the length of treatment is normally not as long in comparison with the treatment time of juvenile orthodontic treatment. When you’ve finally put in your time, and your braces are off, you are going to be stoked about your brand-new smile and adjusted bite.

Candle Crafts For Kids Jan 13th 2012, 04:05 For as much as candle making is about creating the warmth and glow of candlelight for your very own there can also be a fun and whimsical side of candle making, which we are now going to explore. Any wax can be used in candle crafts for kids but since paraffin wax does release soot and other elements into the room when lit we will be discussing the use of soy wax. Soy wax burns cleaner and because it is made from hydrogenated soy beans it is a renewable resource. Using renewable resources as much as possible is a good thing to teach our children, I believe. And here’s a reminder of the basic plan for making a candle using soy wax and that this part of the process is best left to the adults in the family. First you melt the soy wax to 150-180 degrees Fahrenheit in the top of a double boiler. Be careful not to keep the soy wax above 150 degrees for too long because it could burn and take on a yellowish appearance. Once the wax is melted you can add any additional color. Then remove it from the heat and add your fragrances. It is best to use 7% fragrance by weight which is 1.12 ounces of fragrance oil for every pound of soy wax. If the fragrance concentration is too high then it may bleed through the candle. With the wax at around 140-150 degrees Fahrenheit you can then pour the wax into the mold to cool. Be careful not to pour the wax at too low of a temperature or the wax could crack. The perfect temperature is between 95 and 110 degrees Fahrenheit. Let soy wax candles cool naturally and don’t hurry the cooling process along or you could cause the finished candle to crack. The parts that kids excel at are in the planning and the execution of the rest of the project. Great projects, especially for younger kids are to use toilet paper or paper towel rolls for your candle mold. These molds need not be removed either. The kids can then decorate them with stickers, construction paper, glitter, or other items depending on the season. Candles that look like candles, or candy canes, or snowflakes would be wonderful crafts for the winter months. If you make container candles kids can decorate the jars with paint pens, by gluing on beads, gluing glitter, ribbon or other sparkling items. Tissue paper pictures glued to the side of the jar would also give the candle a wonderful glow from the inside out.. And one of the most fun candle crafts for kids has to be making floating candles. This would be a great project if you had a small amount of wax left or if you had leftover wax left from the bottom of votives or containers. The fun part is picking cookie cutters for the shape of your candles. This would be a wonderful task for kids to be part of. With a baking sheet lined with foil you set the cookie cutters here, but first we need to get them ready. Using masking tape we need to seal the cookie cutter to the lined baking sheet. Run the tape around the outside edge of the cookie cutter leaving

5 Important Points to Be Considered For Green Architecture Jan 13th 2012, 10:40 The art of sustainable architecture is a practice of contracting buildings while taking into consideration relevant issues like environmental growth and sustainable progress. The basic motto of this kind of architecture is to reduce the impact of wide scale construction on environment by sticking to a minimalist attitude regarding consumption of energy resources, building materials and development space. The following points mentioned below can help in further promoting this noble practice: Using Small Space Is Critical To Green Architecture Building smaller houses has become the order of the day. We cannot afford to waste natural resources and earth space to fulfill our desire of constructing and living in extravagant houses. Smaller houses means more people get accommodation without wasting too much of natural resources. Solar Energy And Green Architecture Coincide Side By Side All our energy resources are on the verge of getting depleted. Hence usage of solar energy is being encouraged in almost all quarters of the globe. Apart from that, the inclusion of solar heating techniques make these buildings all the more comfortable to live in. A well contracted passive solar energy should be sufficient for letting in enough sunlight in the rooms. Water Conservation Made Possible Only Through Green Architectural Practices One of the main standpoints of green architecture is to encourage conservation of water. Minimum consumption of water is to be adopted while building green homes. Ideally the toilets, faucet aerators, showerheads ad flow restrictions should be chosen with great care to minimize the water usage in these houses. Residents must also be encouraged to plant drought-tolerant plant in their gardens. Renewable Energy, The Main Standpoint of Green Architecture An extremely effective method of generating electricity while saving fossil fuel can be achieved by sung nature agents like hydel power, wind power, solar power etc. Conserving Local And Natural Resources Via Green Architectural Practices Mother Nature has been kind to us human beings for millions of years. Nature has been offering all the resources we need to build our houses. Therefore we have to use them wisely while constructing newer buildings if we want to leave some of these resources for our future generations. You can also plant more and more trees around your home to enhance the natural ambience. Lastly stick to using local building resources as that can save fuel and energy which or else would have been used in transporting them to the construction site. Green architecture when followed honestly saves you money, but more importantly saves the environment. So act smart and show your love and support for making Green architecture more and more popular in days to come.

Ten Proven Tips to Buy the Best Meat Available Jan 13th 2012, 11:33 Ten Proven Tips to buy the Best Meat Available As you look through the meat section at your local grocery store you are probably like so many others asking yourself if the steaks you have chosen is really good meat. Here are some tips on how to make sure you buy good meat. The quality grade does not necessarily mean that you will be getting good meat. Some cuts of meat are just naturally more tender than others. You should look for cuts from the less used muscles along the back such as the rib and loin sections. The shoulder, flank and leg cuts will be tougher. How to make sure you buy good meat As you look through the meat section at your local grocery store you are probably like so many others asking yourself if the steaks you have chosen is really good meat. The USDA beef quality grade is like this prime, choice, select, standard, commercial, utility, cutter and canner. The best beef that you can find is of course prime, but this is very hard to find and does come with a large price tag. Most of the beef that you find at your local grocery will be choice, select or standard. Standard is usually sold as un-graded or as “brand name” meat Roast and steaks should be firm. Do not purchase soft or squishy feeling roast or steaks no matter the type of meat. Check the sale by date and no buy after that date. You should buy the meat either before or on the day that is the “sell by date”. Check the packaging for any type of damage. The meat should be cold and wrapped securely. The package should not contain any moisture. This could mean that the temperature of the meat has been above 40 degrees and that will cause the taste of your meat to be less quality. Look for beef that is bright red in color and has thin creamy white fat evenly distributed throughout the roast or steak. On the other hand, veal should not be bright red; it should be almost white in color or lightly pink. Before you buy any meat find out if it has been injected with flavorings. You do not want to purchase any meat that has been injected with flavorings, this can cause your meat to break down and become mushy. Do your own tenderizing. Do not buy meat that has been tenderized by the butcher. He uses piercing products that allows the natural flavor and juices to escape from your meat and this will be produce a tough and un-flavorful meal. Try to purchase dry aged if at all possible. This type of meat will probably only be found at a butcher shop. Dry aging is a process where the meat is taken from the bag that it arrives in to the butcher and is hung in a cooler for a certain amount of time to dry out. This will make the cost go up, but the aging adds more flavor and also tenderizes the meat. If you buy your steak from the local grocery, the steak has been cut, wrapped in plastic and has aged on the way to the store. When in doubt, talk with your butcher. He can answer all your questions regarding the different types of meat, cuts and may even have some great recipes for you to try.

Can Antique Furniture Reproductions Be Genuine? Jan 13th 2012, 10:27 Why would anyone buy antique furniture reproductions? If the styles and construction of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries are so appealing, why not just buy the genuine antique? After all, what can compare with the wonderful sense of history and romance conjured by a genuine antique? What ardent seventeenth century lovers may have stolen a kiss on that Louis XIV loveseat, what secret missive may have been composed atop that delicate marquetry writing desk? Undoubtedly, antiques have an undeniable cachet. All of which again begs the question: why not buy the original? And frankly, as a dealer who has collected, sold and loved antiques for virtually all of my life, I would be hard-pressed to find a reason not to. Except.. Since the turn of the last century, truly fine antiques have become increasingly difficult to find, and, consequently, increasingly expensive. Antiques having become something of a craze during the 1980s, old barns and attics, once the source of many a delightful find, have long since been mined of their treasures. Oh, of course, antiques were constructed to last, so that is not to say they no longer exist. Only now, that sturdily comforting Country French table, that elegant Louis XV banquette, that incredible Malouine parquetry armoire that you so covet is already living happily ever after in someone else’s home. Or being offered at a price so exorbitant it takes your breath away. And that, in a nutshell, is the answer to “Why buy reproduction furniture?” But, since genuine antiques will always hold a special place in my heart (in fact, when the opportunity arises, I still collect the occasional piece), I am something of a snob when it comes to reproductions. In fact, in my opinion, as surely as there is such a thing as a “genuine antique,” there is also a “genuine reproduction.” That is, I do not consider a piece of mass-manufactured furniture that is simply made in the style of an antique to qualify as a genuine reproduction,
